Watched The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit last night and it made me wish I lived in simpler yet more complicated times.
The biggest incentive I have to lose weight is not health, but the promise of wearing 60s and 70s cut clothing. — Me, 6/26/2011 11:15PM

This is the follow up to day 2 of the Great Depression menu. Did I mention that I lost 1.6 lbs having nothing but great depression menu style food? Well I did. This recipe was by far the best. In fact, not only did we make it on Great Depression Week, but we had it again the other day. How can you not love a meat loaf patty wrapped in bacon on a mashed potato patty? Need I say more? You can find the recipe here.

Coming Soon - Day 3 Corn Chowder - FAIL!
I have been fascinated by The Great Depression for several years and recently discovered a menu online that featured recipes for a week. I decided that since I was on the Weight Watchers program, I would give depression era food a try. Afterall, the were all thin right? Not by choice but by default. They also burned calories and probably didn’t sit around an air conditioned cubicle eight hours a day. I tried it anyway and ended up losing 1.6 pounds at the weekly meeting. One big thing that I made sure of was portion control, which I’m sure people in the 30s did by default.
The first dish we prepared was the pork stew. It was extremely easy to make and was exceptionally delicious. I had grown up with a variation of this stew that had steak instead of pork, probably my grandma’s recipe from that era. I asked her once when I was in elementary school about the depression, but she had no idea what I was talking about. “We always struggled with being poor and never had a lot to eat” she told me in Spanish.
Here is a photo of the finished pork stew. You can find the recipe here.
