Electronic Mastermind

Have you seen the commercial that asks, “What can I get for $1?”  Well, if you stumble into a thrift shop in Elgin,TX you could get your paws  on one of the greatest calculator based games of 1977, Master Mind.  I decided to buck the tiger and lay down a hard earned Washington for this device.  I crossed my fingers hoping this device even still worked after sitting in a box for God knows how many years, but an hour later I was riding the lighting  that is Master Mind.  Read more of this article »

Austin Chronicle Short Story Entry 2008

I entered the Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest this past December.  This was an incredible feat for me.  This was my second effort in three years.  I actually liked this story better than the first, although the concept for the first one is good.  I am reworking the first entry into a children’s book and I will post more info here as it becomes available.  The image below shows the spinning of the drum for the Vietnam War.  This is relevant to my short story…

Original caption: Washington: Selective Service Director Curtis Tarr spins the drum containing the sequence capsules, as the draft lottery got underway in the Commerce Department auditorium. The lottery was to determine the callup order of nearly 2 million young men turning 19 this year on the basis of pairing of 365 capsules containing the days of the year and an equal number of blue capsules containing draft sequence numbers 1 through 365.

Ernest Hemingway once said that you never hear the bullet that kills you. That is, if the hand that triggers that bullet is not your own. Today is my 60th birthday. It will also be the anniversary of my death.
